Have you ever envied tourists walking the Strip on an average day in July? Me neither. However, taking that walk on a balmy day in December? Oh, yeeeah. My son-in-law David mentioned off-handedly that he's always wanted to walk from one end of the Strip to the other. Granted, this is a guy who, along with my husband Paul, hiked from the north side of the Grand Canyon to the south side in one day. I mapped it and realized it was just over five miles from the new 6.5 million dollar Las Vegas Boulevard Gateway Arches near the Stratosphere to the iconic Welcome To Vegas sign a bit south of Mandalay Bay. We decided it was doable and we were going to be the ones to do it, especially since Whitney and I were promised snack breaks.
We started around 10:30am at the Stratosphere and finished after dark around 6:30pm, clocking in a total of 11.4 miles. We more than doubled our mileage because our goal was to visit every casino on our route, which we mostly did. Toward the end that wasn't quite so important anymore. At the beginning of the walk I was taking the stairs instead of the escalator. That was dumb! I had a great time and would love to do it again, this time starting from downtown. It was fun to see our familiar city from a new perspective.
