Summer is in full effect in the Las Vegas valley. With temperatures soaring above 100°F, it’s critical to keep your furry family members safe and comfortable. Pets can suffer from heat exhaustion and heatstroke much faster than humans, so it’s up to you to protect them from the harsh desert sun.
1. Hydration is Key: Always provide fresh, cool water, both indoors and outdoors. Keep multiple bowls around your home and yard, and check them often. Adding ice cubes can help keep water cool longer.
2. Avoid Hot Pavement: Asphalt and concrete can burn your pet’s paws in seconds. Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when surfaces are cooler. A good rule of thumb: if you can’t hold the back of your hand to the pavement for seven seconds, it’s too hot for paws.
3. Create Shade and Shelter: If your pets spend time outside, make sure they have plenty of shaded areas. Trees, tarps, or umbrellas can offer relief, but the best solution is to keep pets indoors during peak heat.
4. Never Leave Pets in Cars: Even with the windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can become deadly within minutes. Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car, not even for a quick errand.
5. Offer Cool Treats and Activities: Frozen treats like ice cubes with a bit of low-sodium broth or frozen peanut butter can be fun and hydrating. Many dogs also love playing with a kiddie pool or sprinkler for supervised cool-down play.
6. Know the Signs of Overheating: Watch for excessive panting, drooling, weakness, confusion, or vomiting. If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet to a cool area immediately, offer water, and call your vet.
Keeping your pets safe in the Las Vegas heat takes a little extra effort, but your furry friends are worth it! Stay cool, stay safe, and enjoy the sunshine responsibly.
